Tanzania’s Riyaz Somji steals the show with a hole-in-one at the Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Open

Today, during the second round of the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Open at Entebbe Golf Club, Tanzania’s Aalaa Riyaz Somji from Arusha Gymkhana Golf Club made history with a hole-in-one on the par-3 6th. Her inch-perfect 9-iron shot was undoubtedly the highlight of the day, and perhaps the entire competition.

However, it was a tough round overall for Somji, who finished with an 83, leaving her 10 strokes off the lead. Despite the struggles, she walked away with a brand new classic Motorola phone from HH Solutions.

Meanwhile, Martha Babirye took charge of the leaderboard with a 76, setting the stage for a thrilling final round on Saturday. She’ll face stiff competition from Tanzania’s trio—Iddy Hussein Madina, Neema Olomi, and Hawa Wanyeche—who are all within two strokes of the lead.

Though Babirye was not pleased with her putting performance, she remains confident. “I didn’t putt well,” the three-time champion admitted. “I’m not happy with how I played, but I know what to do tomorrow.”

With defending champion Peace Kabasweka absent, Babirye stands as Uganda’s best hope for victory. However, with Judith Komugisha and Rest Nalutaaya trailing by four and six strokes, respectively, the competition remains fierce.

Tomorrow’s final round will also conclude the bronze category, with a subsidiary round featuring amateur golfers gearing up for next week’s men’s competition.

Other sponsors of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open include ABSA Bank, Pinnacle Security Limited, Aquafina, Case Medical Services, HH Solutions, Medisell, NCS, MTN, and NBS Sport.
