Joseph Reagan Akena of Lugazi Hills holds a slim one-stroke lead at the top of the leaderboard as the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Open heads into its final day. After three grueling rounds, Akena’s consistent performance, carding a 73 on day three, places him at a gross score of 217, just one shot ahead of his nearest rivals.
Hot on Akena’s heels are two formidable challengers, Joseph Cwinya-ai and Titus Okwong, both tied for second place with a gross score of 218. Cwinya-ai, a previous champion (2021) with a wealth of experience, matched Akena’s 73 on day three to stay in contention.
Meanwhile, Okwong delivered the standout performance of the day with a stunning bogey-free 68, the best round of the tournament so far. Okwong’s surge up the leaderboard has set the stage for a thrilling finale at Entebbe Club.
In fourth place is Abdul Kakeeto, who sits at a gross score of 222 after shooting 78 on day three. Kakeeto remains within striking distance but will need an exceptional final round to overtake the top three.
The competition remains fierce within the top eight as well. Michael Tumusiime and Samuel Bazaale are tied for fifth with scores of 223, while Ibrahim Ssemakula and title holder Godfrey Nsubuga are tied for seventh at 224.
As the tournament enters its final day, the stage is set for a dramatic finish, with the top players battling for both the trophy and a share of the Shs15 million prize pool.
Meanwhile, Ugandans have taken control of the leaderboard, occupying all of the top 10 spots as they head into the final round. Kenya’s Adel Balala, who led on day one, has now dropped to a tie for 11th. Tomorrow’s showdown will see the local players battling it out for the championship.
