Caddies and course maintenance staff are unsung heroes in golf, with their input rarely appreciated despite being essential to the enjoyment of every round played on the course.
However, during the second edition of the I&M Katogo Golf Series held on Saturday at Entebbe Club, title sponsor, I&M Bank, gave school going caddies and children of course maintenance staff a major leap in life by ensuring that they keep in school.
As a continuation of their golden jubilee celebrations CSR activities, I&M Bank handed over a cheque worth Shs20m, towards this effort.
The resources will strictly be used to support the school-going caddies, as well as the children of the caretakers of the course, who are mostly women. They will receive school fees for at least the next three years.
While speaking at the tournament’s 19th hole, I&M Bank CEO Robin Bairstow said that the bank decided to support the cause because it perfectly aligns with their CSR pillars of enabling giving, conserving the environment, and education.
“This symbolises our commitment towards supporting the communities where we operate, especially women and the youth. We believe in investing in their future and promoting sustainable development through our initiatives.,” Bairstow noted.
The Vice Captain of the Katogo series, Andrew Kibaya, said they’ve been helping their members grow and develop. Now, seeing progress, they’re also supporting unsung heroes of the game.
“These days, we have excess supply of resources after working on ourselves. As a result, we’ve shifted our focus from meeting our own needs to supporting the community. We extend our thanks to our anchor sponsor, I&M Bank, for making this possible,” Kibaya stated.
Eng. Jacob Byamukama, the Entebbe Club Chairman, says that they, together with the Katogo Series leadership are currently in the process of identifying potential beneficiaries.
